Ground Covers

Ground Covers are those plants which provide horizontal growth habit covering the soil surface. this category includes low growing perennials, groundcovering shrubs and succulents. Giving year-round coverage these plants are sometimes used as lawn replacements or simply as weed suppressants. Others may be planted in rockeries, as wall spillovers, border definitions or cascading hanging baskets.

Ajuga Reptans Purpurea

Grown in sun or semi-shade. Has an attractive contrasting purple foliage with blue Hyacinth-like flowers.   Spring & Autumn.

 

           

Armemaria

Requires full sun.               A low growing groundcover with abundant single white flowers throughout Winter.

 

 

         

Bacopa Species

Available in white & blue flowering varieties.     Suitable in semi-shade       to full sun. Long flowering.

 

 

        

Calabrachoa 'Marco Polo'

Also known as perennial Carpet Petunia. Many colours available including purple, white, pinks, cerise, apricots & yellows.

 

 

      

Cerastium Tomentosa

Also commonly known as Snow in Summer.    Selected for its silver foliage in a full sun situation, it has a flat growth habit with small white flowers in Summer.

 

        

Dampiera Diversifolia

A native groundcover with small foliage & blue flowers early Spring. Ideal for wall spillovers.                Requires full sun.

 

       

Dianthus Mars

A perennial prostrate Dianthus with red Carnation-like perfumed flowers.     Silver foliage. Ideal for rockeries. Drought resistant.

 

         

Dichondra Repens

Often grown as a substitute for lawns in shaded areas. Very flat growing with inconspicuous flowers.    Leaf shape is round & dark green in colour.

 

          

Gazania Silver Leaf

Ideal for blanket filling large areas of garden. Drought tolerant with silver leaves & yellow flowers 9 months of the year.

 

         

Grevillea Species 'Gaudi Chaudi'

Lanigera & Bronze Rambler. All low growing suitable for larger garden areas or rock spillovers. Grevillea Lanigera is suitable for shade or sun, whereas all others require sun. Spider-like flowers for several months.

 

Heeria reptans

An ideal flat coverage for all positions in the garden. A very neat groundcover with mauve buttercup flowers late Spring-Summer. Best suited for rockeries, wall spillovers & around specimen trees in large pots.

 

Parthenocissus 'Shade Mat'

Ideal for large area coverage in shaded positions. Very vigorous with dense lime green foliage.

 

 

 

Hibertia Obustifolia

Native variety with yellow buttercup flowers. Very hardy in full sun. Drought tolerant.

 

 

         

Lobelia Fairy Ice

White perennial growing to 10cm in height & 1mtr spread. Semi-shade to full sun. Suited for cottage gardens.

 

 

        

Mesembranthemum Species

Available in a multitude of colours including reds, pinks, mauves, yellow & white. A succulent-type plant for full sun in rockeries & hanging baskets, footpaths or troughs.

 

      

Phlox Perennial Alpine

The ideal groundcover for full sun with exposed frost conditions. Pink flowers early Spring, flat growth habit.

 

 

 

 

          

Portulaca Sunjewels

Possibly the most vibrant showing of flowers of all groundcovers. Needs full sun, hot conditions to thrive. Commonly used for hanging baskets, pots & rockeries. Available in multitude of colours: red, yellow, orange, pinks & white.

 

Availability in warmer months.

       

Pratia Puberula

An extremely flat ground hugging plant with small star-shaped flowers. Best placed amongst stepping stones or pavers. Sometimes used at the base of bonsai plants. Semi-shade to full sun.

 

 

          

Rosmarinifolia prostrate

A cascading groundcover with a 1mtr fall if planted on the edge of the wall.  Fragrant foliage with blue flowers. May be used for culinary purposes or ornamental.

 

        

Scavoela Fan Fare

A tough creeper for large exposed areas. Blue flowers throughout Spring & Summer. Prefers dry conditions in most soil types. Tolerates neglect.

 

 

         

Viola Hederacea

A creeping Viola with self propagating runners making this plant a very hardy indestructible groundcover. Suitable for hard to grow areas. White & mauve flowers most of the year.

 

             

Tips

Groundcovers best suited for hanging baskets include; Convolvulus, Camellia Sas. Marge miller, Camellia Sas. Classique, Rosmarinifolia prostrate, Bacopa, Dampiera and Heeria reptans (see below)

Groundcovers best suited for mass plantings and weed suppression; Grevillea Gaudi Chaudi, Grevillea Obustifolia, Mesembranthemum, Parthenocissus 'Shademat', Trachlespernum asciaticum, Viola Hederacea.

Groundcovers best suited in drought conditions; Grevillea Bronze Rambler, Gazania, Hibertia Obustifolia, Mesembranthemum, Portulaca, Sedum, Scavoela Fan Fare.

Groundcovers best suited in shaded conditions; Bacopa, Grevillea Lanigera, Heeria, Parthenocissus.

Groundcovers with coloured foliage; Ajuga (burgundy), Cerastium (silver), Gazania (silver), Mesembranthemum (silver), Sedum (yellow).

Groundcovers with fragrance; Dianthus species, Gardenia radicans and Trachlespernum asciaticum (see below)

 

Groundcovers best suited as lawn substitutes; Dichondra, Thymus, Chamomile, Pratia.

Carpet Roses may be planted as a thorny deterrant for both animals and trespassers.

 

 

 

Camellia Sasanqua 'Marge Miller' & Sasanqua 'Classique'

Both species are suitable for spillovers for retaining walls or general groundcovers. Pale pink flowers similar to the traditional semi-double. Sasanqua varieties.

 

 

Carpet Rose Medeiland

Growth to 1 mtr wide & 0.5 mtrs in height. The bright pink variety being the most vigorous. Other colours include white, pale pink, red, yellow & apricot. Full sun.

 

 

Gardenia Radicans

Growth to only 0.3 mtrs & coverage of 1mtr. This plant makes an excellent border groundcover to any garden. White fragrant flowers in Summer with glossy green foliage. Prefers full sun conditions.

 

Trachlespermum Asciaticum

This species is a groundcover version of the common Chinese Star Jasmine. It has white perfumed flowers in Summer with glossy green foliage. Drought tolerant & suitable for sun or shade.

 

Verbena Passion Series

A flat growing plant for full sun with either purple, white, pink or red clustered flowers. Useful in hanging baskets or rockeries. Requires full sun.
